BAföG
Basically, every German student is entitled to individual educational support if they are under the age of 30 at the commencement of studies and have not yet completed a first level education which was eligible for financial support (according to the respective law). Foreign students who are over the age of 30 at the time of application are also eligible for BAföG support subject to certain requirements.
BAföG support is only paid when the funds necessary to cover the cost of living are not available through another source - either though one’s own income and assets or through the income of spouse or parents. In some exceptional cases, educational support will be paid without considering the parents’ income.
